Interviews

OK, So you made it through the resume process and beat out the competition for your chance to sit down with the boss.  It's your time to shine. This can make you or break you. What will you say, what will you wear and what kind of questions will they be asking?

Well, don't get to nervous. A job interview can go very smooth if you are prepared. Think of it this way. When you watch a T.V. News interview how does it play out?  Some go great and some go down hill quick. Right?  This is all a result of who takes control of the conversation. If the interviewee has control then the interviewer will loose part of their control and allow the interviewee to speech more freely. This is what your trying to accomplish.

In order to take control of the interview you will have to prepare yourself ahead of time. The person that knows the job gets the job.

* Learn everything you can about the job and the company your applying to.

* Research common interview questions that are ask by most job interviewers.

* Be sure to dress  for the job you want.

* Use keywords from their ad to help you impact the interview.

* Be ready to make a friend at the interview and not a boss.

*  Practice what you are already prepared to say.

If you go to an interview and know nothing about the job or company then you must not want a job very bad. Get on that internet and find out what it is you'll be doing. How do you know what to research? It was in the ad when you applied for the job.  When an ad tells you what their looking for then you give them what their looking for. This is all the interviewer really cares about. Why? Because they don't know you yet (if they don't know you) or what kind of person you are. At the time they placed the ad all they needed was someone to fill the position.

After you know what it is your going to be doing at this job and are ready to talk about it then now it's time to make a friend out of the interviewer. What do you think makes an interview so uncomfortable? Well for most people talking and sharing personal information with a  total stranger can be very uncomfortable. Just remember that every friend you have was once a stranger before you knew what you had in common. A persons office can really say a lot about them. So after you shake their hand and greet yourself (always shake and greet yourself) with a smile have a look around. Try to find something to relate with. Maybe they have a teenager and so do you or they like a certain sports team. This is a great ice breaker. Now they know something about you and they like it. You've just made them a person that will give you the wave when they see you next time. Now you have better control over the conversation and can relax a little.

Knowing some of the questions they may ask can really benefit the outcome of the interview. This way you can practice what your going to say. The less stumbles the more control. Say only what you know. If they stump you completely then use this one " I don't have an answer for that but, I will be sure to find one.". Then you sound like you already work there. There are a lot of questions that are commonly asked in most interviews.

 1. Describe a challenging work issue you had to face, and how you dealt with it?
   2. How do you handle conflict?
   3. If you were on a merry-go-round, what song would be playing?  If you were going to be an animal on the merry-go-round, what would you be?"
   4. In what way do you think you can contribute to our company?
   5. Tell me a story.
   6. Tell me about a time when you tried and failed.
   7. Tell us about your analytical skills.
   8. What are some of the things you find difficult to do?
   9. What are your short and long term goals?
  10. What can you add to what we have already asked you that should make us want to hire you?
  11. What does "customer service" mean to you?
  12. What do you wish to gain from our company?
  13. What do you know about our company?
  14. What do you think the employee's responsibilities are to the company?
  15. What motivates you?
  16. What things make a good team member?
  17. Why do you feel we should hire you for this position?
  18. Why do you want to change jobs?
  19. Why do you want to leave this job after only four months?

Everyone will relate in someway to some of these questions. Write down what you would say and practice talking about it.

During the interview be sure to use words that get the other persons spirits up. Words like great, very good, excellent and wonderful. Words like these trigger an emotional response when talking to someone. For example, if you say " I'm doing great.". This will make someone feel all the better to have met you. Make it exciting to meet you. People love it and it just might get you that job.

I have one more little trick to make you stand out in the crowd. After you finished your interview, good or bad. Send the interviewer a thank you card or letter in the mail the next day. Tell them how much you appreciate them taking their time to consider you for the job. People love thank you letter. If you make them feel good then you just made a friend.

Here are some ebooks and guides to help you get through that interview.
